From the very first moment it was certain that next to the antique gilded bathtub, the bathroom would be decorated with a painted mural.
The couple who commisioned the wall painting, dreamed of a restrained, elegant and tasteful bathroom for their house. After having discussed their ideas, they felt that the atmosphere and feeling of a room in a French chateau was what they wanted to see in their own home. As the house is situated next to the woods, that view will be reflected on the wall.
Certain from the first minute was gilding of the long-standing antique bathtub, and then the sketching, colour schemes and painting of the mural.
In order to accomplish this, we started with the purchase of an antique bathtub, which we refurbished in this special worn gold colour.
Many types of paint were discussed, but important factors have been taken into consideration, such as allowing the paint and the humid, wet environment of the bathroom to be used to achieve a vibrant, blended effect on the surface.
The aim was to create the effect of worn-out surfacescontrasts elegantly with the white inside.
The next step was the planning of the wall painting
For the baseline image, the distant landscape is sketched on a 5m x 3m wall surface. Here we would like to achieve a worn effect, as if the image had been exposed after scraping away several layers of paint.
We painted this part of the forest with powder paint and a special glaze on the worn, limy surface, which deliberately resulted in a worn, old surface.
At the request of the customer, we left figures out of the design, moving the composition towards a sfumato-like, aerial landscape. For the effect of perspective, we gently guided the eyes with elaboration of the closer trees and the shades of paint colors.
What’s more, with the use of natural materials in a wet, humid room, there is no need to fear that the painting will be damaged. According to the plans, there will be a foot bath next to the painting.
