Mural preservation
Sándor-Metternich Castle, Hungary

In mural painting conservation, the technique is defined by the original method of execution. Fresco involves the application of pigment onto wet plaster, allowing the paint to become an integral part of the wall surface. Secco painting is executed on dry plaster, where pigments are applied using a binding medium. Sgraffito is created through the application of multiple layers of coloured plaster, which are then carefully scratched back to reveal contrasting tones under the surface.

The restoration of incomplete wall paintings is carried out using traditional decorative painting techniques, including lining and gilding, as well as the careful use of materials such as imitation wood and marble. These methods are applied to visually integrate missing areas while respecting the original design, ensuring a harmonious and historically appropriate appearance.
