Restoring an oil painting damaged during transport

Repairing surface abrasions and paint losses

Painting can be particularly vulnerable during transport

Surface abrasions and localised paint losses

The treatment began with a detailed condition assessment.

The painting was examined under both normal and UV light to establish the extent of the damage. UV examination revealed several areas of previous restoration, and the treatment was therefore extended to address these earlier interventions as part of the overall conservation process.

After treatment

The removal of discoloured and inappropriate overpaint, areas of abrasion and paint loss were carefully reintegrated through selective colour-matched retouching.

A final protective varnish was then applied to provide an appropriate and visually coherent surface finish.
